Fall might be the most underrated season in dive travel. Summer’s warmth is still hanging around in the water, the peak-season crowds have gone home, and — best of all — a surprising number of the ocean’s headline animals show up right around now. Manta aggregations hit their stride, shark seasons run deep into November, and a couple of the world’s great liveaboard routes swing open for the year. If you’ve got some travel in you before winter sets in, these ten destinations are where we’d point you.
Northern Red Sea
Red Sea — Hurghada, Egypt
The Egyptian Red Sea barely notices that summer is over. Scuba diving the waters around Hurghada stays warm and inviting well into fall, visibility is superb, and the beginner-friendly reefs and nearby shipwrecks make it an easy sell for mixed groups. As a bonus, the offshore shark action to the south is just heating up as the season turns.
Central Visayas
Philippines — Bohol
Scuba diving Bohol and neighboring Panglao Island are a diver’s playground, and fall is a lovely time to go as the seas calm heading toward the dry season. Balicasag Island delivers turtle encounters and swirling schools of jacks, while the muck sites hide some of the best macro life in Asia. It’s warm, affordable, and endlessly photogenic.
South Pacific
Fiji — Pacific Harbour
Fiji calls itself the soft coral capital of the world, but Pacific Harbour has another claim to fame: one of the most thrilling shark dives anywhere. In the Beqa Lagoon, you can come face to face with big bull sharks — and sometimes tiger sharks — alongside a supporting cast of several other species. Fall sits nicely in Fiji’s drier stretch, making it prime time to go.
Eastern Pacific
Costa Rica — Bat Islands
Off the Guanacaste coast, the Bat Islands (Isla Murciélago) are Costa Rica’s bucket-list shark dive. This is where you go to meet big bull sharks in the blue — an advanced, adrenaline-charged experience at the famous “Big Scare.” The season runs right through fall, and the nutrient-rich green-season water keeps the whole area buzzing with life.
Equatorial Pacific
Galápagos, Ecuador
If you only take one big trip this fall, make it this one. From roughly June through November, the remote northern islands of Darwin and Wolf host whale sharks — mostly enormous adult females — cruising past divers hanging in the current. Add schooling hammerheads, sea lions, and Galápagos sharks, and it’s arguably the best big-animal diving on Earth right now.
Indian Ocean
Maldives — Hanifaru Bay
Fall lands squarely in the Maldives’ plankton-rich season, and that means mantas. Baa Atoll’s Hanifaru Bay is legendary for the manta and whale shark feeding events that peak in the back half of the year, when dozens of rays can gather to loop and barrel-roll through the soup. It’s one of the ocean’s great spectacles.
Coral Triangle
Komodo, Indonesia
Indonesia’s Komodo National Park catches the tail end of its dry season in fall, making it a smart time to visit before the weather shifts. Expect electric currents, coral in absurd health, and reliable manta encounters at cleaning stations like Manta Point. And when you surface, the world’s largest lizards are stomping around the islands topside.
Eastern Pacific
Socorro Islands, Mexico
Here’s one for the calendar-watchers: the Socorro liveaboard season reopens in November, and it’s worth the wait. This remote Pacific archipelago is famous for giant oceanic manta rays that seem genuinely curious about divers, along with dolphins, silvertips, and schooling hammerheads. Early-season trips are a fantastic way to close out the year.
Southern Caribbean
Bonaire
Not every fall trip has to be a far-flung liveaboard. Tucked below the hurricane belt in the southern Caribbean, Bonaire stays warm and calm when much of the region is stormy, and its shore-diving-friendly marine park lets you dive on your own schedule. It’s the easygoing, self-guided option on this list — and a genuinely great one.
Micronesia
Palau — Blue Corner
Way out in Micronesia, Palau serves up world-class diving as the year winds down. Blue Corner is the marquee site — a current-swept wall where sharks stack up in the blue — while German Channel brings the mantas. Throw in wrecks, caverns, and the surreal Jellyfish Lake, and you’ve got a destination that rewards the long flight many times over.
